Why was it closed? It not only remained outside fare control but also outside civilization. For a while it was safe only during the morning rush hour, at any other hour it was full of very aggressive panhandlers and used by the homeless as a bedroom and toilet. Rather than deal with the problem, it was just closed, in fact, many of the areas outside fare control zones which were magnets for aggressive panhandlers and homeless were likewise closed.

Very cool. I remember using that passageway back in the 80's, and remember the signs in Penn Station, "To N/R, etc". Then remember in the 90's, remembering you used to be able to get the N, etc from Penn Station, looking for it, but not being able to find it, and not understanding that you used to be able to do that, and now you couldn't.
Of course, that was pre-internet, so it wasn't until years later that I remember reading about the "infamous" passageway.
