Rockettes to ride subway to promote Metrocard deal for Radio City Christmas Spectacular tickets

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

They’re doing it again! Just like last year, the world famous Radio City Rockettes will be riding the nostalgia train tomorrow to promote the current MetroCard Deal, which saves you $10 off of tickets to select performances of the Christmas Spectacular.

If you’re in the area, I encourage you to come join the Rockettes on this ride of the 1930’s Era IND Nostalgia Train (also known as the R-1/9 type cars, or “Arnines”). You’ll be able to meet the Rockettes, have your picture taken with them, and experience what it was like to ride the subway in the 1930’s! I took this ride last year and I can tell you it is a lot of fun.

The event begins at 10:00 AM at World Trade Center station on the (E) line, but the train might not actually leave the station until a little while later. Once it leaves, with you and the Rockettes onboard, it will run up to the 47th-50th Sts-Rockefeller Center station, making stops along the way.

Here are some photos I took of last year’s event:

In honor of New York City mayor Michael R. Bloomberg declaring April 29th, 2009 “Duke Ellington Day,” The Islands Of The Bahamas is sponsoring a free ride (no additional cost beyond the normal subway fare) on the New York City Transit Museum’s vintage/nostalgia subway train.

The train, made up of 1930’s/1940’s IND R-1 thru R-9 series subway cars, will depart from 125 Street on the (A) (B) (C) (D) at 10:00 AM and run express along the (A), making all normal express stops to Howard Beach on the (A). The train will then make a return trip along the same route, though the time of departure is not yet known. It could be within a few minutes of arrival at Howard Beach.

In commemoration and celebration of the legendary musician and cultural icon, The Islands Of The Bahamas is sponsoring an April 29th run of the last surviving 1939 “A” train.  The inspiration for Duke Ellington’s signature tune, Take the A Train, the historic and beautifully restored “A” train will depart 125th Street at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, making express stops through Manhattan and Brooklyn to Howard Beach in Queens. Open to the public, the festive round-trip runs will prove once again that taking the “A” train is still indeed the quickest way to Sugar Hill in Harlem.

Rockettes Ride the Vintage Rails

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Two Rockettes handed out free Metrocards and rode NYCT’s “vintage” “nostalgia” train of R-1/9 class cars from the World Trade Center station on the (E) to the 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Center station on the (B)(D)(F)(V). The event was a promotion for the recently announced deal where you get $10 off the price of a ticket to the Christmas Spectacular starring The Rockettes when you use or mention code ‘NYCT’. A special metrocard was released advertising this deal as well.

The ride was great and a lot of regular passengers were surprised and excited to both see an old train pull in to their station, and get to meet The Rockettes. Thanks to everyone who made this promotional ride possible, and I can’t wait to ride these old subway cars again as part of NYCT’s Holiday Nostalgia Train rides on the (V) from 2 Av to Queens Plaza on Sundays from 10 AM to 4 PM beginning November 30th.
