MTA New York City Transit issued a press release for the 2009 Holiday Vintage Buses program that, as we reported yesterday, began yesterday.
MTA New York City Transit Runs Special Vintage Buses for the Holidays
M42 crosstown bus customers will be able to take a ride back in time when MTA New York City Transit places into service a fleet of vintage New York City Transit buses for the holiday season. Everything but the MetroCard fare boxes will be original.
The crosstown buses will be in operation from Monday, November 23 through the end of the holiday season, running on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. With a little bit of luck and good timing, you could catch a ride back in time on a classic coach for the price of a regular ride. And don’t forget, these 1950s-era buses are equipped with modern fare boxes, so they’ll accept your MetroCard or coins.
“These buses are a living, breathing part of the city’s history,” said Joseph Smith, MTA Bus Company President and Senior Vice President of Buses for MTA NYC Transit. “Riding on these buses is a fantastic counterpoint to the vehicles we operate currently,” noted Joseph Smith. “It’s obvious that we have come a long way since the 1950s and, despite the charm of the older equipment, our customers are benefiting from major advances in bus efficiency, design and accessibility.”
The agency’s historic fleet contains 19 buses, ranging in age from the Queen Anne – a 1917 wood-bodied double-decker manufactured in the shops of the old Fifth Avenue Coach Company – to bus number 1201, NYC Transit’s first General Motors RTS.
Many of the vehicles have been deemed to have historical significance to the city, including bus number 3100, a 1956 GM which was the first air-conditioned transit bus manufactured, and 5227, the last non-wheelchair accessible bus to operate for NYC Transit, pulled from service in 1993.
List and description of buses that will be in operation:
Bus No. 3100 – 1956 General Motors owned and operated by Fifth Avenue Coach Lines. (First Air-conditioned transit bus).
Bus No. 9098 – 1958 General Motors, among the first buses outfitted with fiberglass seats.
Bus No. 2969 – 1948 General Motors, among the first forty-foot transit buses to operate in NYC.
MTA New York City Transit has announced that the uptown side of the Cortlandt Street BMT subway station will reopen at 3PM on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 (see poster).

One of the vintage buses that will be in service along the M42 this holiday season
MTA New York City Transit is once again running select buses from their museum fleet in revenue service for the holiday shopping season. They did it last year, and it was loads of fun.
This year however is even more special – the buses are even older! While last year’s vintage buses were mainly in service in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s before being retired, this year’s buses date from the 1950s! These older buses are commonly referred to as the “old look” buses.
While details of the 2009 Holiday Vintage Bus program have not yet been officially released, it is believed that one or more vintage buses will be running along the M42 bus route in Manhattan (42 St Crosstown) between 10 AM and 2 PM, Monday to Friday, through the end of December.

They’re doing it again! Just like last year, the world famous Radio City Rockettes will be riding the nostalgia train tomorrow to promote the current MetroCard Deal, which saves you $10 off of tickets to select performances of the Christmas Spectacular.
If you’re in the area, I encourage you to come join the Rockettes on this ride of the 1930’s Era IND Nostalgia Train (also known as the R-1/9 type cars, or “Arnines”). You’ll be able to meet the Rockettes, have your picture taken with them, and experience what it was like to ride the subway in the 1930’s! I took this ride last year and I can tell you it is a lot of fun.
The event begins at 10:00 AM at World Trade Center station on the (E) line, but the train might not actually leave the station until a little while later. Once it leaves, with you and the Rockettes onboard, it will run up to the 47th-50th Sts-Rockefeller Center station, making stops along the way.

MTA New York City Transit has provided some good advice on how to best travel to the ticker tape parade celebrating the New York Yankees victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 baseball World Series:
Although the Lexington Avenue line serves the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, Fulton Street-Broadway/Nassau, Wall Street, and Bowling Green stations, Yankees’ fans should be aware that the 4 5 6 lines are usually crowded during normal weekday rush hour along the corridor.
Instead, fans are encouraged to use the 1 line or the R or W lines to Rector Street, or the E to World Trade Center. Fans should also consider taking the 2 or 3 lines to Chambers Street or Wall Street, and the J to the Broad Street station.
Crowding conditions at the City Hall R and W station, Park Place 2 and 3 station and nearby 4 5 6 Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station may force trains to bypass those stations during the parade and ceremony at City Hall. All lines affected will be monitored by supervision to ensure smooth operation.

Metrocard: Proctology Clinic - Say No to Surgery!
I couldn’t believe that I had found a real Metrocard when I picked it up off a reader in a midtown subway station this evening. But it seems to be legit. A proctology clinic advertising on a Metrocard.
A google search reveals that billboards of a similar design have appeared recently around New York City. Except that the billboards use a peach where the Metrocard shows an apple. So there’s a line – a peach/butt crosses it, but proctology itself does not. Good to know.
As I have for both the ALDS and ALCS, now that the Yankees are in the World Series, I’m once again reminding you that MTA New York City Transit would like you to ride the subway to get to Yankee Stadium. I took their advice and ended up riding a set of vintage Lo-V subway cars from 1917 on the day of the first game of the ALDS. I wasn’t able to get up to the Stadium on the day of the first game of the ALCS, but if I had, I also would have ridden the Lo-V subway cars. So you can be sure that I’m planning on riding up to Yankee Stadium tomorrow evening, which is when the first game of the World Series will be taking place.

Just as I did last week, I’m again letting you know that MTA New York City Transit wants you to ride the subway to get to Yankee Stadium later this week and next week* to see the Yankees play in the ALCS vs. the Angels. I got there on a train of 1917 Lo-V cars. Seems like the only way to go…
