From March 1 to April 30 customers will receive 2-for-1 admission to the museum when they show their MetroCard at the Museum Admissions.

Free $2.25 Metrocards on New Years Eve

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Press Release

New York Times article

Teams of people representing CIROC, the “Official Vodka of New Year’s Eve” – and Sean “Diddy” Combs will distribute thousands of debit and MTA Metrocards to adult consumers (while supplies last) in New York City between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Each debit card will provide up to $15.00 in cab fare – the approximate cost of a single taxicab fare within New York City. All MTA Metrocards are redeemable for a one-way subway or bus fare valued at $2.25.

First of all, $15 of cab fare will not take you any significant distance. If you’re taking a cab, you’re probably going further than just to the UWS or the UES or to Williamsburg. He should really be giving out $30 to $40 debit cards.

Second of all, what is this $2.25 Metrocard? Is it really just a normal green-on-white single ride Metrocard? Seems unlikely, since they normally expire within 2 hours. So will it be a normal pay-per-ride Metrocard? Will it be branded for the Vodka? If you get one, please let me know. And if it’s a special Metrocard and you want to let me have it when you’re done with it, that would be swell :)

Rockettes to ride subway to promote Metrocard deal for Radio City Christmas Spectacular tickets

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

They’re doing it again! Just like last year, the world famous Radio City Rockettes will be riding the nostalgia train tomorrow to promote the current MetroCard Deal, which saves you $10 off of tickets to select performances of the Christmas Spectacular.

If you’re in the area, I encourage you to come join the Rockettes on this ride of the 1930’s Era IND Nostalgia Train (also known as the R-1/9 type cars, or “Arnines”). You’ll be able to meet the Rockettes, have your picture taken with them, and experience what it was like to ride the subway in the 1930’s! I took this ride last year and I can tell you it is a lot of fun.

The event begins at 10:00 AM at World Trade Center station on the (E) line, but the train might not actually leave the station until a little while later. Once it leaves, with you and the Rockettes onboard, it will run up to the 47th-50th Sts-Rockefeller Center station, making stops along the way.

Here are some photos I took of last year’s event:

Need a proctology clinic? Check your Metrocard.

Metrocard: Proctology Clinic - Say No to Surgery

Metrocard: Proctology Clinic - Say No to Surgery!

I couldn’t believe that I had found a real Metrocard when I picked it up off a reader in a midtown subway station this evening. But it seems to be legit. A proctology clinic advertising on a Metrocard.

A google search reveals that billboards of a similar design have appeared recently around New York City. Except that the billboards use a peach where the Metrocard shows an apple. So there’s a line – a peach/butt crosses it, but proctology itself does not. Good to know.

maximum LOLs to be had

This NYCT SERVICE ALERT appeared at mta.info Tuesday morning. Upon seeing it, I says to myself, I says: “Have trolley tracks been relaid in the Bronx and have the (B), (D), and (F) trains been diverted to run along them?!?!?”

In case you’re not getting the joke, look at the last paragraph.

The 2009 METS MetroCard is here!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Continuing a long tradition, New York City Transit has released its 2009 edition METS / Take the (7) Train to the Game MetroCard. There have been 2 million copies of the card produced, and they are available for purchase at subway stations both on and off the (7) line.

NYC Subway celebrates opening days at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

New York City Transit wants you to “Take the Train to the Game” when it comes to New York baseball. And while that includes the number 7 subway to Citi Field, the B, D, and 4 subway lines to the new Yankee Stadium, and a few bus lines no one has ever heard of, does it also include historic nostalgia subway trains from the New York Transit Museum collection?

Well, they’ve done it before – they ran the Train of Many Colors (aka the SMEEs) to both the final METS opening day and the final METS game at Shea Stadium last year, and they ran the Lo-V train to the final YANKEES game at the old Yankee Stadium last year.

And now NYCT is advertising the opening days at brand new Citi Field and the new Yankee Stadium as a “Special Event” (click on the poster below).

Seems like they are going all out. So we may just be going for some historical subway rides two weeks from now!

New York City Subway goes Web 2.0

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I was doing a Google search today for information on a certain MetroCard when I ran across some flickr photos of the Rockettes handing out MetroCards at the World Trade Center terminal of the (E) subway line. I thought “hey, that’s funny, I was there too and I took some very similar photos.”

So I looked closer at this user’s photostream and saw that all of the photos had to do with either MetroCard promotions or popular tourist sites that New York City Transit can bring you to. This had to be something official.

Final confirmation came when I clicked on the user’s Profile and read this:

New York City Transit’s official Flickr account informs viewers of MetroCard Deals, special events, and points of interest to be found while traveling on its subways and buses. Visit us at www.mta.info

So the New York City subway has gone social! It’s part of Web 2.0! Congrats!

The subway’s flickr account is “MetroCard City 2009“.
