The following MTA NYCT Subway service alert was posted this morning for the G train because of a “water condition” at  the 21 St – Van Alst station:

Water? At 21 St – Van Alst? YA THINK?!!?

Bx10 bus accident Monday in Spuyten Duyvil

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Monday afternoon there was an accident involving a New York City Transit bus on the Bx10 route and a car. The car fared much worse than the bus it seems. The driver of the car had to be cut out with the Jaws of Life. This section of Johnson Avenue was closed for a while and all buses and cars coming down Kappock Street had to be diverted to Palisade Avenue. And all through this there was no mention of the service change on mta.info.

My wife happened upon the accident scene and took the following cell phone photos.

Note: the bus involved in the accident was 2009 Orion VII Next Generation (NG) Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) #4379.

Redesigned New York City Subway Map to debut in June 2010

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Concurrent with the subway service revisions planned to take effect June 27, 2010, a new subway map edition will be released that does more than just reflect the changes in service. The new map will still closely resemble the current one, with the following significant design changes:

  • Subway lines shadowed (outlined in gray)
  • Service Guide removed
  • Accessible Stations list removed
  • Bus transfer bubbles compacted
  • Parks will be olive colored
  • Water will be a deeper blue
  • Manhattan will be 30% wider
  • Staten Island will be 50% smaller
  • Other boroughs enlarged
  • Most ferry routes removed

The Barge of Death has returned to 207 St Yard

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

After an absence of several months (due to the fact that the reefing program was temporarily suspended), the Barge of Death is now back at 207th Street Yard. I can see the top of the backhoe that is on top of the barge and used to push the subway cars into the water when out at sea. And the tug Virginia just came back under the raised Broadway Bridge to head back to the Hudson River.

So it looks like there may be another barge going out in the not too distant future…

Graffiti vandal loses leg in subway tunnel

Monday, February 15th, 2010

These people do not belong in subway tunnels, and they should not be vandalizing public property. Let what happened to this kid be a lesson to others like him.

(1) and (6) trains had big problems this morning

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Service Alerts Screenshot

Things did not look good for the IRT No. 1 and 6 subway lines this morning. The (1) had signal problems at three different stations all at the same time!

  • 116th Street-Columbia University Station
  • 59th Street-Columbus Circle Station
  • Marble Hill-225th Street Station

While the (6) had a track problem at the Westchester Square Station.

The (1) problems were resolved one by one, with the last one cleared up at 1:41 PM. Unfortunately, at 4:01 PM, more signal problems cropped up along the (1), this time at the 125th Street Station. That issue was fixed over four hours later, at 8:39 PM, according to the service alerts emails.
